Union Square Events welcomes its new Executive Chef, John Karangis, marking his return to Union Square Hospitality Group where he began his culinary career 20 years ago as a line cook at its debut restaurant, Union Square Cafe.
“We are thrilled to welcome John Karangis home to USHG,” said Danny Meyer. “John will build upon the culinary excellence and warm hospitality for which Union Square Events has become known, and it’s especially gratifying that John’s career has come full circle since he first worked at Union Square Cafe as a very young cook twenty years ago.”
John’s return to the roots of his culinary career signals a homecoming for the chef not lost on the colleagues he rejoins at Union Square Events, including USHG’s Director of Culinary Development, Michael Romano, under whose guidance John worked at Union Square Cafe. “I am thrilled to welcome John back to the family and to work with him again,” said Romano. “It has been a wonderful experience seeing how the seeds of excellence and talent that I observed in John in 1992 have blossomed throughout his career. John is certainly a strong and mature culinarian – but equally important are his admirable leadership skills.”
Prior to joining the team at Union Square Events, John served as Executive Chef for Restaurant Associates and Executive Chef at Butterfield 81, in addition to establishing his own chocolate confectionary, Karangis Chocolates. Most recently, John joins Union Square Events following eight years as Senior Executive Chef for ARAMARK, where he was responsible for all culinary operations at the Goldman Sachs world headquarters in New York in addition to partnering with the company’s UK and New Jersey offices. In this role, John helped to establish a distinguished culinary program focused on delivering world class dining and hospitality.
Rounding out Union Square Events’ culinary leadership alongside John is Executive Pastry Chef, Daniel Keehner who joined the team earlier this summer. Under its new culinary leadership, Union Square Events will continue to raise the bar on memorable dining experiences, bringing its culinary and hospitality expertise to everything from intimate gatherings to large scale galas, corporate events, weddings and more.
